The
aliens are introduced to the concept of paying income tax. Dick
has been warned that it’s a complicated process, but the aliens
find the tax forms silly and boring as they make their first attempt
to file a return. It isn’t long, however, before they’re as dazed
and confused as any human taxpayer. Dick enlists Mary’s aid in filling
out the forms. She informs him that he’s about to lose his shirt;
he owes nearly $10,000. When Sally realizes that there are numerous
tax deductions for home businesses, she decides to open a hair salon
in their apartment. Their first customer arrives, and Sally goes
to work on her with a pair of poultry shears. Dick tells everyone
not to worry; he’s crunched a few numbers, and with the tax refund
they’re getting they’ll soon be millionaires. But Mary hands Dick
a letter from the IRS with the news that the Solomon’s are going
to be audited. Business is booming at the hair Salon as Harry and
Tommy serve as Sally’s assistants. Dick informs the others that
the audit means they’ll have to account for what they’ve been doing
for the past six years. They will need foolproof backgrounds by
the next day. Even though they’ve rehearsed their stories, the aliens
do not succeed in convincing the IRS auditor, who informs them they
owe $16,000 in back taxes.
