When Mary asks Dick if the Solomons will be the subjects of her documentary on
the typical American family, he's thrilled and agrees immediately. Nina suggests that he think twice about it, but Dick says he's the perfect American patriarch and it's time
that everyone knew it. Sally's not sure the documentary's a good idea; they may be
revealed as aliens. The others overrule her, and shooting begins. At first Mary has a
hard time getting the Solomons to forget about the camera. Everyone's being too nice,
and they certainly aren't being themselves. But Dick slips and addresses Sally as
"lieutenant," and, as they try to cover up, Mary catches them in some lies. The
camera's rolling as the aliens talk among themselves about the possibility of exposure.
Mary wonders what they will be exposed as. To cover themselves, the aliens come forth
with all sorts of accusations and confessions: Sally's a lesbian, Dick's an abusive father,
Tommy's a bed-wetter, and, not to be excluded, Harry announces that he's an alcoholic.
Don's amazed that his long-time girlfriend is a lesbian until his partner reassures him
that Sally probably thinks of him as a woman. Dr. Albright's left reeling at all the
revelations, and her documentary is a stunning success.
