Griffin
shows Hilton a column in the local paper by sportswriter Ray Barone
in which he claims that the winning basket in the 1955 Queens Division
basketball championship was made by his father, Frank Barone. Hilton
is stunned because he scored that basket and has been talking about
it for more than 40 years. Hilton meets Ray Barone to clarify things,
but Ray says his father’s been telling him the story of the game
since he was a kid. Hilton says then he’s been lying for a long
time. Later, Ray arrives with his dad, and Frank and Hilton go to
the kitchen to discuss things. Frank begs Hilton not give him a
break and let Ray think his dad’s a hero. Hilton says he’ll think
about it. Ruth, who’s been listening to the conversation, tells
Hilton he shouldn’t demand that Ray print a retraction. Hilton reluctantly
concedes to Ray that his father scored the basket, while Frank chides
Ray for even doubting his story. Ruth is invited to a pep rally
at the high school to commemorate the 1955 championship and Frank’s
winning basket. It’s clear that ever yone thinks Hilton is dead.
Hilton says he feels like he’s in the Twilight Zone and begins trying
to contact his former teammates. He learns that Frank told the school
he was deceased, so Hilton tells Ray the truth. Ray confronts his
father who finally confesses, and says he’ll tell the truth at the
pep rally. But at the rally he lies again and says he made the basket.
Hilton is amazed to learn that one of his former teammates has been
bitter for over 40 years because he felt Hilton deprived him of
his one shot at glory by hogging the ball and making the winning
basket instead of passing it off and letting him shoot.
