When
band leader Paul Shaffer and a producer from David Letterman’s talk
show come into the coffee shop, Hilton wrangles an invitation to
appear on the show. Unbeknownst to him, they plan to bill him as
"the Dullest Man in New York." He rehearses his "act" at home until
Ruth begs for mercy. On the day of the show, while working on a
junker car he’s just bought, Griffin accidentally knocks a cap off
Hilton’s tooth. He volunteers to drive Hilton to the dentist to
glue it back on. Suddenly, Erica rushes in to tell Hilton that he
needs to leave -- the show tapes at 5:00 rather than 11:30, the
time the show airs. Griffin offers to glue Hilton’s tooth in himself,
and he accepts. On the way to the show, the car stalls, and as they’re
trying to get it started, Hilton and Griffin are accosted by two
undercover female cops posing as hookers. A series of miscommunications
leads to their arrest. Hilton protests that he needs to get to the
Letterman taping, but no one believes him. Erica arrives and gets
word back to Ruth, Pauline and the Letterman people that Hilton
won’t be able to do the show. Letterman instead sends a cameraman
to the jail, and Hilton’s wish to appear on a talk show comes true
after all.
