Griffin’s
pleased that he’s gotten more work as a sound engineer -- he needs
the money since he lost the boarders who were renting his house.
Of course, that means Hilton thinks Griffin should move back into
his own house, but Griffin says he needs at least another five hundred
dollars a month to meet his mortgage payment. Hilton suggests that
Griffin get a roommate and immediately volunteers Erica. She’s reluctant
since she’s still in debt and can only afford to pay $400 a month.
But a deal is struck giving Erica more hours at the café and requiring
her to cook dinner for Griffin once a week. With everyone about
to move out, Pauline warns Ruth and Hilton about the Empty Nest
Syndrome. They insist that they’ll be glad to have their home to
themselves and it’s high time that Griffin and Erica were living
on their own. As he helps Griffin move, Hilton makes no secret of
the fact that he’s glad to have Griffin off his sofa and out of
his house. But his happiness is short-lived -- Erica leaves a frying
pan unattended on the stove, starting a fire that burns Griffin’s
house down and destroys all their possessions. Even worse, Griffin
learns he’s underinsured and will receive only $1,000 from his insurance
company. Feeling like a fool, he and a guilt-ridden Erica move back
in with Hilton, but not before Griffin tells Erica that they’re
both paying rent and he’s going to find something meaningful to
do with his life.
