Erica
has a date with Gil, a jazz musician, and he and Hilton bond immediately,
swapping stories about famous jazz players they’ve known. Hilton
thanks Pauline for introducing Erica and Gil. He’d love to be able
to brag about his son-in- law, the jazz musician. Ruth reminds Hilton
that marriage is Erica's decision, but Hilton can’t stop raving
about the guy. Griffin introduces himself to Gil, and explains that
he lives with the Lucases because Erica burned down his house. It
quickly becomes clear that Gil and Erica, who both have other romantic
interests, would be better off as friends, and they’re both fine
with that. Hilton, however, has already begun bragging to his friends
about Erica’s jazz musician boyfriend. Pauline and Ruth try to break
it to him gently that Erica is no longer seeing Gil. Everyone, including
Griffin, tries to console Hilton about the breakup. Hilton insists
that he and Gil have their own friendship that has nothing to do
with Erica, but Gil always seems too busy to get together. Hilton
goes to one of Gil’s gigs and meets James, the father of another
woman that Gil is friends with. Hilton and James hit it off and
make plans to go to some jazz clubs together.
