Hilton and Ruth discover that their laundry room window has been forced open and the screen torn. They search the house and realize that burglars have taken Hilton's CD player. Ruth tells Hilton she hates not feeling safe in her own home; and they agree to install a security system. The system, however, comes with its own set of problems - like how to remember the security code. When Hilton tells Pauline, Jurnee and her friend Kevin about what happened, Pauline quietly takes Kevin aside. She tells him she saw him break into the Lucas' house, and says it's up to Kevin to make things right. Kevin tries to secretly return the CD player to the Lucas' home, but he sets off the alarm and is caught. He tells everyone that he borrowed the CD player for a school project, but Ruth doesn't believe it. Kevin begs them not to tell his parents and confesses to Griffin that he planned to trade the CD player for some new sneakers because his friends were teasing him about his old ones. Hilton insists on taking Kevin home, so he will confess what he's done to his parents. Later, Kevin tells Ruth and Hilton that his parents really came down hard on him and begs their forgiveness. Ruth says trust is a very fragile thing, and it's going to be hard to trust Kevin again. She hands Kevin a mop and tells him to get busy at the café. Trust has to be earned.
