It's Valentine's Day at the Lucas house, where Griffin and his teaching colleague, Miss Williams, are doing schoolwork while Jurnee addresses valentines. Griffin, obviously attracted to Miss Williams, makes a suggestion about them getting together. She quickly shoots him down. This inspires Hilton and Ruth to reminisce about their first meeting at a dance in two animated sequences. Back at the café, Pauline has been watching a man who has been lingering over coffee for several hours. Ruth thinks that he's clearly interested in Pauline, he's been hanging around for three days and staying for hours. Pauline begins talking with the man, Jack, who's vague about what he does for a living but implies he's a writer. Pauline is flirtatious, believing that Jack has been coming in to see her, and he does nothing to change her mind. But later, the truth comes out -- Jack is actually a police officer who's actually been on a stakeout. Mortified, Pauline refuses to speak to Jack, even though he tries to reassure her that it's the best stakeout he's ever been on. Later that evening, Pauline, feeling miserable, goes to see Hilton and Ruth. She discovers that Hilton has invited Jack to the house for a Valentine's dance in the living room, and has also invited Miss Williams as a surprise for Griffin.
