Griffin
takes a job teaching science at a rundown school that’s well known
for its discipline problems. There he meets Mr. Fleming, an extremely
cynical instructor who tells Griffin he doesn’t even bother to learn
the new teachers’ names because they won’t be around very long.
Griffin finds himself in a classroom where there aren’t enough chairs
or textbooks for ever yone and discipline is non-existent. The only
help comes from Mr. Fleming, who reveals his secret - he bribes
his students with candy and pretzels in hopes that they won’t hurt
him. Griffin’s first few days are a disaster, but Hilton urges him
not to give up. He begins using model cars to illustrate some scientific
principles and actually manages to capture the interest of some
of the students. He tells Mr. Fleming that at least he’s made a
small start and with his enthusiasm and Fleming’s experience they
have the opportunity to make some real progress.
