Ruth
and Pauline are now running the Hardback Café and are getting used
to the book business. Hilton’s current concern is getting his gutters
cleaned out and he’s enlisted griffin to help him out. Erica is
stuck substitute teaching an earth science class and needs griffin’s
help with a lesson plan. Darien arrives and informs Griffin that
he’s arranged a date for him with Sheila, a beautiful flight attendant,
and Griffin suggests that they have dinner that night. Luis, a student
of Griffin, shows up and tells him that his dad, who doesn’t speak
English, needs some help filling out some insurance forms. Griffin
tells Keisha, who is with Luis, that he’s noticed that she’s been
acting up lately, not paying attention in class, fighting with her
friends, so if she needs someone to talk to, he’s available. Griffin
suddenly has a lot of things to deal with when all he really wants
to think about is his date. As he finished helping Erica, Hilton
reminds him that the gutters await. Luis’ dad comes by for help
with the insurance forms and Ruth, who speaks Spanish fluently,
agrees to assist. Griffin happily goes upstairs to start getting
ready for his date. Erica needs to run through her earth science
presentation again, so she drafts Hilton to be her audience. Hilton
pretends to be an obnoxious, uncooperative giving the substitute
teacher a hard time. Sheila arrives, and as she and Griffin are
about to go to dinner before her night flight, Keisha arrives and
tells Griffin she needs to talk. Griffin takes Keisha aside to talk
as Sheila follows Hilton outside and gives him a hand cleaning the
gutters. Keisha tells Griffin that her family is having severe money
problems (her dad can’t work because he’s recovering from bypass
surgery) and they’re about to be evicted from their apartment. Sheila
comes in as they are talking and tells Keisha he same thing happened
to her when she was eight. Sheila and Keisha leave to continue their
conversation as griffin’s hopes for a great evening with Sheila
disappear. But Griffin runs into Sheila at the café the next day
and is delighted when she suggests they reschedule diner for that
night.
