Hilton exchanges some polite conversation with Annie, a pretty, older woman at the neighborhood newsstand. Before he knows what's happened, she's followed him back to the Hardback Café, acting as if she knows him very well. Ruth reacts as Annie sits down on Hilton's lap and kisses him on the cheek. But when Annie calls Hilton "Charlie" and asks him to get her some tea, it's clear to Ruth that there's something wrong with her. Hilton tells Annie that his name isn't Charlie, but Annie pulls a photo out of her purse and claims that the white man in the photo with her is Hilton. At this point, Hilton wants to have this woman committed, but Ruth doesn't want to turn her over to strangers. Ruth pretends to want Annie's address for the store's mailing list and when she gets it, she sends Griffin to try to find someone from Annie's family. Ruth invites Annie and "Charlie" to dinner to keep the woman busy. Griffin, however, returns empty-handed, unable to find anyone who knows her. Ruth, trying to find out anything, asks Annie about her children and learns that she has a daughter, Michelle, in Connecticut. Hilton pretends that he wants to call his "daughter" and Annie gives him a phone number. Later, Michelle arrives to take her mother home and explains that her dad was out of town when he died, and her mother hasn't been able to get over the guilt that she wasn't with him.
