Ira’s
mother, Ruth, has come to visit and is staying with Cybill. They’re
very close. They go to the movie theatre where Zoey is working as
an usher under an oppressive boss, Chuckie. Cybill is distressed
at Zoey’s lack of ambition but lightens up when she finds Zoey’s
sent away for an application from Stanford. Cybill overhears Zoey
say she’s not sure she sent away for the application because she
wants to go or because she’s expected to. Ruth tells Zoey that college
isn’t for everybody and the she can learn a lot just by living life.
Cybill doesn’t agree. She and Ira band together to let Ruth know
their feelings about the way they see Zoey’s future. Cybill meets
an adorable guy at the movie theatre who is a fan of her work. She
wants to call him, but her mother has sent her a copy of The Rules,
so she isn’t sure how to let him know she is interested. Ignoring
The Rules, Cybill calls him and they have the date from hell (his
table manners are atrocious). Cybill wants to give him the brush-off
but, per The Rules, he thinks she is playing hard to get. Not knowing
how awful her date was, Ruth worries about her relationship with
Cybill if Cybill were to get re-married. When Richard wants to meet
her mother, Maryann is determined to find a surrogate model she
can pass off as her own. When Betty White isn’t available, Maryann
recruits Ruth. Richard admits that he knows the truth but he and
Ruth decide to toy with Maryann for a while. Later, Richard tells
Maryann he likes her no matter what her family is like. All’s well
the end well.
