Episode #109 "Bob Gets Greedy"

SYNOPSIS:

Finances are a little tight since Donna's gone back to school, so she asks her mother for a loan; she assures her mom that Bob hasn't been gambling. Bob's at a Red Wings game with Megan when God appears and strongly encourages him to volunteer for charity work; Bob resists, but God says just do it. Later, Bob's watching Leno when the Devil appears and tells him to forget about charity work, because it's a giant waste of time. The Devil pulls out a Palm Pilot and quotes some statistics about the misappropriation of charitable funds; he exits, leaving the Palm Pilot behind. Andy finds the Palm Pilot, and Donna says it's unbelievable that Bob would buy it when they can't even pay their electric bill. Megan shows Bob that you can even check sports scores on the Palm Pilot and points out the score for the Knicks/Cavs game. The next day at work Bob tosses the Palm Pilot into the dumpster. That night when he's watching TV he hears the score for the Knicks/Cavs game and realizes that the Palm Pilot had the scores the day before the game was played. He rushes to work to retrieve the Palm Pilot; he's going to be rich! The Devil, watching Bob on a screen, says that victory over the forces of good is about to be his. The next day Bob's bookie informs him that he's a winner, and Bob actually pays Mike some of the money he owes him. The Devil and God are at the laundromat, and God accuses the Devil of trying to corrupt Bob with the Palm Pilot. God appears to Bob while he's barbequing and asks how the charity work is going. Bob only has to do an hour a week; that's all God is asking. Bob pulls out a hundred dollar bill and suggests a donation instead, but God prefers good works. Donna's astonished when Andy pays the pizza guy with a hundred dollar bill and tells him to keep the change because his dad has a lot more where that came from. Donna confronts Bob, and he confesses that it's gambling money; Donna thinks Bob's never been sexier. The Devil, watching on a drive-in movie screen, gloats that things are moving according to schedule. Bob and Donna rush out and buy an RV and a boat. Then Bob takes her on an overnight trip (across the river) to Windsor, Ontario. It's been years since they've had a night alone like this, but Donna hurries out to go shopping and Bob goes to make some more bets. Bob makes a killing at Lucky Pierre's Casino, and, once again, God appears to find out if Bob's started his charity work. He asks Bob if he really thinks the Devil's letting him use the Palm Pilot for free. Nothing's free, God reminds him. Bob tosses the Palm Pilot in the river, and the Devil appears and asks if there's a problem. Bob says he knows the Devil wants him in his debt; the Devil feigns hurt feelings and protests that he's misunderstood. The Devil tells Bob that the Red Wings are going to win again, but Bob looks at the Palm Pilot and sees the words "Transaction Complete" under the score. Bob knows what that means, and in spite of the Devil's reassurances, he smashes the Palm Pilot on the ground and stomps away. When Bob gets home he tries to talk to Donna, who's really enjoying being rich. Bob says they should quit while they're ahead, but Donna wants a new house, new clothes, real jewelry. Bob says that's his dream too, but they can't get there by gambling. Bob, Donna and Megan are at the hockey game. The Devil, dressed as a beer vendor, informs Bob that Donna placed a bet, so when the game's over Donna belongs to him. With 55 seconds on the scoreboard, Bob runs onto the ice and jumps onto the back of the Red Wings' goalie. Soon Bob's being chased by security guards as he scrambles up on the rafters trying to reach the scoreboard. He knocks the scoreboard onto the ice with two seconds remaining, and it explodes into a million pieces. The game is forfeited, and Donna is saved, but Bob's in jail. Donna still doesn't see what the problem was; what's wrong with living well? Bob says it's about values, and, she has to believe him, he did it for her. Donna exits and God appears to congratulate Bob. He made the right choice, but he still needs to be doing some charity work. Bob volunteers for the dunking booth at the school carnival and has lots of customers, including a bunch of hockey players.
