The
stresses of motherhood and her job give Grace a bad case of insomnia,
but winning two tickets to the opera in St. Louis through a radio
giveaway does much to lift her spirits. Neither Nadine nor Russell
nor her refinery workers will volunteer to be Grace’s "date," but
Russell agrees to ride to St. Louis to visit his father while Grace
goes to the opera. Russell confides to Grace that he has anxieties
about seeing his father, whom he visits very rarely, because his
father has always seemed so cold and distant. Cousin DeForest arrives
with a makeup kit and velvet dress and turns Grace into Cinderella.
Grace has an adventure at the opera with a handsome Italian, while
Russell finally finds a way to bond with his father.
