Episode #211 "Safety Dance"

SYNOPSIS:

Sean and Claudia, chaperoning a dance at Lily’s school, are startled as Dean and Lily are dragged off by a bunch of angry nuns with Lily screaming that she didn’t do it. Later, Lily tells Walt that she’s quitting St. Finian’s and going to public school with Dean. She and Dean have been unfairly persecuted. Sister Helen catches Lily and Dean making out, and Dean is holding a bottle of Scotch. Sister Helen ignores their protests that the Scotch isn’t theirs. Sean comes in and tells Lily they have to talk, but Lily runs upstairs. Sean tells Walt that he and Claudia didn’t ask to be chaperones; Sister Helen made them feel guilty and pushed them to do it. Lily, of course, is mortified. Her parents are the last people she wants around as she shows off her new public school boyfriend. At the dance, Sean and Claudia were determined to leave Lily completely alone. Lily tells Jimmy that the dance started out great. They were there only a few minutes when Dean suggests that they go make out. But in an attempt to avoid her geeky parents, she and Dean run into Brad. After a brief conversation in which Brad tries to pretend that Dean isn’t there, they continue on their mission to find a make-out spot. They find an area at the rear of the stage and duck behind the backdrop. Dean’s kissing Lily when his foot knocks something over. It’s an empty liquor bottle. They’re wondering who it belongs to when Sister Helen pulls back the curtain and busts them. Lily tells Jimmy that Dean is now banned from future activities at St. Finian’s. Downstairs, Sean and Claudia are confessing to Walt and Eddie that, in fact, the bottle belonged to them. Claudia talks to Lily who’s astonished that her parents would bring alcohol to her dance. That’s not what happened, says Claudia. Sean and Claudia are dancing and reminiscing about their own high school dances. They remember making out behind the stage themselves; one night they even had a bottle of scotch that they stashed there when they heard someone coming. They wonder if the bottle could possibly still be there, and go backstage. They’re astonished when they discover the bottle still hidden in a vent. They drink some scotch and take off when they hear Sister Helen coming. Brad arrives at the Finnertys. He’s very upset about Lily and Dean being together; he’s also very drunk. He found the bottle that Sean and Claudia left behind and finished it off. He hurled the bottle under the stage curtain just in time for Dean to find it and get busted. And when Sister Helen “punishes” Sean and Claudia by giving them 2000 envelopes to stuff, Sean tricks a hungover Brad into doing the job for them.
