It's the week before Brad and Lily will be taking the S.A.T.s, and Brad's obsessing about it. He tells Lily she'd better study, because he can't marry someone who gets less than a thousand. Lily plops on her bed, and a shaggy head emerges from under the covers. Everyone screams. It's Jack, a "friend"of Henry's. Sean tells Lily that Henry feels, and Sean agrees, that they don't do enough to help the less fortunate. Claudia tells Sean that it's about time for Jack to go. Sean reminds Claudia that the whole thing got started with Jimmy and Henry making fun of a homeless guy on the street. Sean lectured the kids telling them how important it is for them to respect all people. The lecture really affected Henry who had a lot of questions afterward. Where does a homeless guy go to the bathroom? Does he sleep on the ground? What does he eat? Why don't we feed him?
What if no one thinks it's their job to feed him? Sean's trapped on that one. They take some spaghetti to a homeless man, Jack, but forget to bring a fork. Jack's eating the spaghetti with his hands. Sean asks Jack to come with him to have some dinner. Jack's afraid that Sean's going to steal his organs but comes along anyway. Lily still wants to know what he's doing in her bed. Jimmy says it's because he locked his door. Lily tells Brad they should go to her room and study, but Brad thinks she just wants to make out. Sean wants to know if Lily's been studying for the S.A.T.s. She says yes, but not over-studying. Sean tries to tell her how important the test is to get into a good college, but she protests that college isn't for everyone. She doesn't care about college. Sean says she's going to college. End of discussion. Claudia tells her to get her books; they're going to cram. Lily tells her mother that she really wants to sing, and they shouldn't waste their money. Claudia tells her she won't let her make that mistake. She regrets every day that she never went to college. Lily says she never saw her mother as a college type. Claudia realizes that by "college type" Lily means smart. The deadline for S.A.T. registration is the next day, and Claudia needs to register! She'll take the test too and kick Lily's butt. It's getting late, and Sean asks Jack, who's sitting on the couch with Henry, if there's a shelter where they can drop him off. Jack's in no hurry to go anywhere. It's dark and freezing out there, Henry points out. Is that treating Jack with dignity? Lily's amazed that Brad and Claudia are now study buddies. Lily's not worried, she tells them; she's going to ace the test. Several days later, Sean and Eddie come in and Henry wants to know where Jack is. He went to live with his cousin, Sean tells Henry. Brad, Lily and Claudia come in from taking the test. Lily and Claudia got the whole room disqualified when they refused to put their pencils down when the proctor called time. Jack comes in, and he's absolutely furious. He tells Henry that Sean and Eddie tricked him. They pretended to have a flat, and when Jack got out of the car they drove away leaving Jack in front of a homeless shelter. Lily's upset with Claudia about the test, but Claudia observes that Lily learned something important today. She has a real competitive streak; she's motivated. Claudia thinks that she'll take some classes too. It's not too late. Sean and Henry decide to volunteer at a local soup kitchen, and Sean hires Jack to be the bouncer at the bar.
