Brenda,
who’s passionate about animal rights, gets upset when Jamie
comes home with a stuffed boar’s head, so she takes him to
petting zoo to help him get in touch with his gentle side. All’s
well until a duck he’s holding bites him, he flings it away
and it lands in a wood chipper; Brenda’s appalled. Katie and
Steve go to a palm reader who tells Katie that this is her last
incarnation on earth because she’s so highly evolved; Steve,
on the other hand, will be coming back as a beaver which will teach
him responsibility. Later Katie tells Steve she also feels he’s
irresponsible and challenges him to prove otherwise by taking care
of a Digi-Baby; he says it’ll be a piece of cake. Jamie, desperate
to erase Brenda’s picture of him as a heartless animal killer,
goes to the shelter and finds an old, sick cat that’s at death’s
door. He’ll give the cat to Brenda, who, when it dies as it
soon will, will assume it’s her fault and be wracked with
guilt. Brenda accepts the cat, Mr. Pendleton, but it dies when she’s
at work and Jamie’s babysitting. Jamie briefly makes Brenda
believe that Mr. Pendleton’s death is her fault, but she soon
she’s no longer fooled. And Steve’s elated that he was
able to keep the Digi-Baby alive for a day and a half.
