Episode #325 "The Promise Ring"

Eric and Kelso decide to buy promise rings for Donna and Jackie. Leo sells them both a ring along with "a misdemeanor's worth of the other stuff." Kelso wishes there were a "test gift" he could give Jackie, because he's afraid she'll turn down the ring. Eric gives Donna her ring, and she's thrilled. She shows it to Kitty who sends Red to get the camera. Jackie surprises Donna when she tells her that her ring is a pre-engagement ring; Donna had no idea. Fez asks to see both girls' rings, alerting Jackie that Michael also has a ring for her. Donna asks Jackie if she's sure about what a promise ring means; Jackie assures her that she knows. Kelso gives Jackie a sundae as a test gift, and she thinks that he's hidden the ring there, but he hasn't. Jackie's not impressed. Eric's upset when he sees that Donna's wearing the ring on a chain around her neck; she says she doesn't understand why it's a big deal, but she puts the ring on her finger, and Kitty snaps a Polaroid. Both Fez and Jackie tell Kitty that Donna doesn't look happy in the photograph. Kitty observes that Eric isn't good at knowing when fine isn't fine. Donna has a fantasy that Monty Hall offers her the opportunity to choose one of three doors. She chooses door number three and misses out on being a globetrotting rock and roll journalist and first woman president, but wins a promise ring from her boyfriend. Monty plays booby prize music, because this prize means that she'll be stuck in Point Place forever. Donna decides that this is not the future she wants. Fez and Hyde tell Jackie that Kelso is afraid to give her the ring, but Jackie takes charge and demands it from him. They embrace, and Hyde is disgusted, but Fez gets teary-eyed. Hyde accuses Eric of trying to lock Donna up when maybe she isn't that kind of girl; Eric hotly denies it and insists that things are fine. But Donna tells Eric she's giving the ring back. She doesn't know what the future holds, but if they're meant to be together, they will be. Eric says if she can see a future without him and not be broken hearted then maybe they shouldn't be together at all. Donna asks if he's breaking up with her, and Eric says yes, if she's giving back the ring. Donna gives the ring back.
